Although most people have their mind on the holiday season and all of the bustle surrounding it, one thing never changes. We’ve still gotta eat. People get hungry, no matter how busy they are.
It is because we’ve all still gotta eat that I’m including this recipe in this year’s 12 Frilly Days of Christmas.
A story about pasta in our house… When I first met my husband, he wasn’t crazy about pasta. The only pasta he liked to eat was something of the stuffed variety – manicotti, ravioli, something like that. For me, a pasta lover, this was devastating. I was determined to get to the bottom of his pasta issues. Through much trial and error, we finally figured out that it was the sauce that made all the difference for him. My husband needed a good meat sauce that didn’t leave water on his plate. Something that would really stand up.
This pasta sauce is the sauce that finally convinced my husband to enjoy pasta.
If you too have a husband that isn’t a pasta lover, try this sauce on him. You may just convert him.

[Recipe] Meat Sauce
1 lb ground Italian sausage
1 lb lean ground beef
1 sweet pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
8 oz mushrooms, chopped (about 2 cups)
2 cloves chopped garlic
6 cups tomato sauce
1 small can tomato paste
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1 tsp dried basil
1 Tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
In a large pot or a dutch oven over medium heat, brown the sausage and ground beef. Once cooked through, drain the fat from the meat.
Add the chopped vegetables to the pot and continue cooking until the vegetables soften, about 10 minutes.
Add the remaining ingredients, stirring well.
Reduce heat to low and let the sauce simmer for at least an hour.
Serve over your favourite pasta.
